Monthly food spending fell from about $812 to $671, a saving of roughly $140. Most of it came from fewer delivery orders, which had averaged $31 each, including fees and tips. Some households run a fixed weekly calendar — soup on Monday, tacos on Tuesday — while others simply pick from the list each night. We tried both and settled on picking, because the weather and the fridge change faster than any calendar. The point is that the list exists, so the question at 5:30 is \"which one?\" rather than \"what?\"","spans":[]},{"type":"paragraph","text":"One last tip: keep a short shopping list taped inside a cupboard door with the staples every meal on the list depends on — rice, lentils, canned tomatoes, chickpeas, eggs, onions, garlic, a block of cheese.
